Research Focus: My research attempts to analyze the issues faced by the Small Tea Growers (STGs) through the lens of of labour relations and labour process to understand the strategies necessary in order to develop them. The quality of employment in small-scale cultivation differs from the organized tea industry, they are vulnerable as well as their engagement with the market have various middlemen and buffer zones. Labour Relation plays a significant role in bringing contentment and productivity in the industry through policies and practices, wages and salaries, union activities, redressal of grievances, etc. The labour relations of small tea cultivators are also evolving with a new set of organisations like Bought Leaf Factories, Self Help Groups and Small Tea Growers Associations. Hence, the study of labour relation and the labour process in the tea industry from small cultivator’s perspective is essential to reflect and analyse the quality of their engagements, livelihood, and existing market for their produce.
