Research Focus: My interest in research is to understand the idea of ‘Indigeneity/Nativity’ in the context of Citizenship that has increasingly come to inform the imagination of Indian nation-state. The discourses on Citizenship based on the idea of ‘Indigenous/Native vs. Migrant/non-native’, which are otherwise known as Autochthonous discourses, even though rightfully aid marginalized groups in asserting their social and political rights, have a tendency to assume a majoritarian approach towards the idea of nation-state when appropriated by the numerically dominant communities of the land. My aim is to uncover these tendencies in the imagination of Indian nation-state using archival material pertaining to the Citizenship laws as informed by early colonial enumerative practices and strengthened by Indian political elite in the post-independence era.
