Research Interests: Beyond Institutions and Scientists: Locating Science and the Self in the Bengali Public Sphere, c. 1820-1920 (working thesis title)
Research Focus: Broadly, my research will focus on the trajectory of debates and discourses around science practice and education in the Bengali public sphere between the 1820s and the 1920s and try to understand how different social groups of colonial Bengal, experiencing unprecedented epistemological and ideological shifts in the wake of colonial modernity, tried to foster a scientific rational self through spaces of print, literature and advertisement. Borrowed from the post-Enlightenment West, this cultivation of a scientific consciousness among the Bengali public not only took place beyond the small ghetto of colonial institutions and Indian scientists but also posed its difference from the indigenous knowledge system.
