Course Outline: This course aims to undertake a theoretical study of the triumph of democratic mass politics in the twentieth century and the seemingly contradictory political formations it gave rise to. It engages with the ongoing debates regarding the compatibility of authoritarian and populist regimes with political democracies. It tries to explain the phenomenon by looking at the historical emergence of the inherently paradoxical relationship between the concepts of liberalism, democracy, and representation.
