Late Prof. Inder Bir Singh Passi
(Past Honorary Professor)
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at IISER Mohali was initiated by Professor Inder Bir Singh in his capacity as an Honorary Professor back in 2007. I. B. S. Passi had been a Professor Emeritus at Panjab University, Honorary Professor at IISER Mohali, Professor at Ashoka University and INSA Emeritus Scientist. Earlier, he held several academic positions including Professor at Kurukshetra University, Professor at Panjab University, Visiting Professor at University of California Los Angeles, Universitaet Goettingen and Harish-Chandra Research Institute.
He was a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Mathematical Sciences (1983), the Meghnad Saha Award for Research in Theoretical Sciences (1988), the Distinguished Service Award (2003) by Mathematical Association of India; Khosla National Award (2011) by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis Medal (2011) by the Indian National Science Academy. He was a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences and Indian Academy of Sciences.
His broad research interests were in algebra, including group theory, group rings, category theory, homological algebra, and homotopical methods in group theory. He authored/edited more than 10 books/monographs and over 100 research papers.
