Research Area: Geometry and its interface with group theory
Brief bio: Professor Krishnendu Gongopadyay obtained his Ph.D from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in 2009. During the first four years of his doctoral studies, Gongopadhyay was trained at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute Allahabad (Prayagraj) during 2002 to 2006. After the thesis work, he was a Visiting Fellow at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research during 2008-09, and then at the Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata during 2009-10. Gongopadhyay joined the IISER Mohali as a faculty around April 2010. Currently he is serving as a Professor at the Institute.
Gongopadhyay works in the broad area of geometry, especially aspects of geometry where group theory plays a key role. Mostly he has been interested in the geometry of non-Euclidean spaces and some of their generalized versions. Because of the importance of groups in geometry, he has also investigated internal structures of certain groups related to his research interest. In his research, he has used linear algebraic tools and properties arising from the symmetries associated with the underlying space.
Gongopadhyay has published around fifty research articles in refereed journals. He has edited three volumes of the Contemporary Mathematics series of the American Mathematical Society. He has successfully supervised many Doctoral and Masters theses. He regularly attains his scientific social responsibility by organizing and lecturing in many outreach and socio-academic activities like summer schools, workshops for students and mathematics teachers in India.
Gongopadhyay has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (in 2023) for his notable contribution in the interface between group theory and geometry, dealing with a broad range of issues on the theme, including classification of isometries and reversibility properties of conjugacy classes etc.
