IISER Mohali is an autonomous public institute, one amongst the seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Researh (IISERs), established by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India in 2007. IISER Mohali is recognised as an Institute of National Importance.
Separate academic departments at IISER Mohali were created in 2012 after an administrative restructuring, though academic and research activities had started much prior to that since the inception. Initiated by Professor I.B.S. Passi, in his capacity as an Honorary Professor back in 2007, the Department of Mathematical Sciences at IISER Mohali has grown in many ways.
The department has an active research profile, and the faculty here have been regularly guiding PhD students, MS Thesis students and Summer Research students. The department also regulary organizes international conferences/workshops. Research from the department regularly appears, and is cited, in the mathematics journals, and the accolades to our faculty members include Swarnajayanti fellowship, Bhatnagar award, amongst others.
The department also has a strong teaching profile. Our faculty members have been participating in teaching at undergraduate, postgraduate and research level in a diverse range of mathematical topics for BS-MS, Integrated PhD and PhD students. Courses go all the way from algebra, analysis and topology to computer science and applied mathematics. Every semester, a wide array of elective courses are offered to students enrolled in BS-MS and Integrated PhD program. As is the tradition at IISER Mohali, the courses are open to students from other discipline as well, and to encourage the same we also offer a mathematics minor program. Elective courses offered by the Department reflect the research expertise of the faculty that covers a broad spectrum of mathematics.
