Research

Our team delves into the nexus between granitic magmatism and metal enrichment in Earth’s crust. Our inquiry spans various stages in the ‘life cycle’ of metalliferous granites ranging from melt generation, through its geochemical evolution, till up to the terminal stage of granite crystallization involving exsolution of fluids. We look to uncover the vital roles each of these stages play in driving the enrichment of metals within the Earth’s crust. Driven by patterns between granite variants and ‘metal-package’ in associated ore systems, we attempt to shed light on the genetic factors and processes behind these associations. A key aspect of our research includes fluid inclusions – millions of years of old microscopic capsules of hydrothermal fluids entrapped in minerals. Through fluid inclusion studies we extract clues about past fluid activities in various crustal environments ranging up to lower crustal depths. Our recent and ongoing studies entails working out the auriferous potential of late Archean granites, and decoding the anatectic factors, fluid-rock reactions and fluid evolution liable to rare-metal fertility of granites and subsequent ore enrichment.
