3.3 The MIT X-Windows project

The X-Windows graphical interface for Unix-like systems is being coordinated at MIT. The traditional Unix-like system had poor graphics support. The X-Windows support is now standard on most workstations being released by vendors. However, it is possible to obtain much of this software from public archives for little or no cost. There is also an XFree86 project specifically directed towards the IBM-compatible 386/486 machines.
