A brief biography
-----------------
I was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra near the Kabootar Khana in Dadar.
Family
~~~~~~
My mother, Manak Hari Paranjape was a professor of French and my father,
Hari Krishna Paranjape was an economics professor; both of them achieved
significant distinction in their fields. My father is no more and my
mother lives in Pune.
I have a sister, Jyotsna Paranjape who lives in the south of England
with her husband Desmond Chaffey and her son William Siddharth Chaffey.
She has a doctorate in economics but teaches in a primary school.
I am married to `Sudeshna Sinha `__
who is a faculty member at `IISER
Mohali `__ in the Department of Physical
Sciences. We have one daughter, Shruti Paranjape who was born in the
BARC hospital in Mumbai. Shruti is currently in IISER Pune.
Sudeshna’s father is no more. Her mother, Ratna Sinha, has administered
and taught in a number of schools in West Bengal. She currently lives in
Kolkata.
In other words, we are (willy-nilly) a family of students and teachers!
Places in India
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I grew up in New Delhi, first on the campus of the `Indian Institute of
Public Administration `__ and then in the
residential areas just south of India Gate.
After completing my school leaving certificate from the `Sardar Patel
Vidyalaya `__, I joined the `Indian Institute of
Technology, Kanpur `__ for a five-year integrated
master’s programme in Mathematics.
Upon graduation, I joined the `School of Mathematics,
TIFR `__ and completed my doctorate from
there. I learned most of my mathematics there and continue to interact
with people there.
Twelve years after joining TIFR, we moved to Bangalore. I was deputed to
the `TIFR Centre `__ (now it is the Centre
for Applicable Mathematics) for a year after which I joined the
`Stat-Math Unit `__ of the `Indian
Statistical Institute `__, Bangalore Centre.
A year later, we were in Chennai, at the `Institute of Mathematical
Sciences `__.
After thirteen years there we have moved to
`Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research,
Mohali `__ which is now located in its
permanent campus in Sector 81, Mohali.
Places Abroad
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In addition to these places, I have spent significant time at some
institutions abroad.
A post-doctoral visit to the `University of Paris
VII `__ (which was then in Jussieu)
was combined with a visit to the `University of
Paris-Sud `__ at Orsay. I also
visited these institutes later.
For half a year I was at the `Max-Planck Institute for
Mathematics `__ which was then in Beuel,
Bonn.
I taught and learned Mathematics at the `Dept. of Math., Univ. of
Chicago `__ for a year. In the summer of
that year, there was a special programme at the `Dept. of Math., Univ.
of Utah `__ of which I was a part.
Sudeshna and I visited the `Dept. of Math., Univ. of
Essen `__ in the year before Shruti
was born; the university was later merged with the University of
Duisberg.
I was an associate of the `International Centre for Theoretical
Physics `__ (which also has a `mathematics
research group `__) and visited this institute a
couple of times in this capacity.
Over the last ten years or so, I have visited the `Dept. of Math.,
Caltech `__ quite often.
